然而，老伴的去世让原本不善言的卡尔变得性格怪僻，更加的沉默寡言起来。这时候，政府计划要在卡尔所住的地方重新建造，而卡尔不愿意离开拥有和妻子美好记忆的屋子。
正当政府打算将他送到养老院时，他决定实现他和他妻子毕生的愿望。不过，他并不是打算一个人去，而是和他的屋子一起去，因为卡尔在屋顶上系上成千上万个五颜六色的氢气球。
当遮掩气球的帐篷掀开时，色彩斑斓的气球全部腾飞起来，将卡尔的屋子平地拨起并共同飞向空中。正当他独自享受这伟大之旅时，突然传来一阵敲门声，结果他发现他最大的“恶梦”就在屋外——一个过分乐观，自称为“荒野探险家”的8岁小男孩罗素。
但一切已为时已晚，卡尔不得不带上小男孩一起踏上这惊险刺激的探险之旅。
