This is the ultimate issue which confronts us. For the sake of all that we ourselves hold dear, and of the world order and peace, it is unthinkable that we should refuse to meet the challenge.
It is to this high purpose that I now call my people at home and my peoples across the seas, who will make our cause their own.

荷莉·帕克是一位11岁的小女孩，与父亲在加州的快乐的生活着，而父亲尼克·帕克是一位成功的葡萄园主人。荷莉的双胞胎姊妹安妮·詹姆斯和母亲住在伦敦，母亲伊丽莎白·詹姆斯为一位婚纱设计师。这对姊妹完全不知道彼此的存在。
某年暑假，荷莉和安妮碰巧都参加了同一个夏令营。一开始，两人视彼此为敌人，但两人都有一些共同的特质：对草莓过敏，扑克牌高手，擅长恶作剧，喜欢用花生酱蘸饼干吃。某次他们在对对方恶作剧之后，辅导员将他们隔离且要求他们住在同一间寝室，他们便很快发现彼此的身世秘密。之后，他们计划在夏令营结束时交换彼此的身份，去见他们无法相见的父母亲。

尼克与伊丽莎白都认为就算女儿们费尽心力，他们不可能重修旧好；因此他们计划让他们回到原来的家庭，隔一段时间互相见面。荷莉和安妮不赞成父母的做法，坚持父亲尼克带他们俩去年度露营旅行。
最初原本是尼克、伊丽莎白、荷莉和安妮要去露营，但母亲伊丽莎白认为梅尔黛未来就要接替母亲这个角色，坚持梅尔黛与他们共行。在旅途中，荷莉与安妮总在父亲背后捉弄梅尔黛，使得梅尔黛要求尼克必须选边站──女儿或婚姻。最后尼克选择了女儿，荷莉与安妮都松了一口气，相信他们的父母将会重逢，但伊丽莎白坚持安妮必须跟她一起返回伦敦。
当伊丽莎白和安妮抵达他们伦敦的家时，发现尼克和荷莉早已火速赶抵英国，在那迎接他们。尼克向伊丽莎白告白，表示后悔当初让她离开他的身边，且发誓这种情况不会再发生。电影的最后一幕是尼克与伊丽莎白的二度结婚婚纱照，且多了荷莉和安妮，协助两家庭复合的管家马汀和崔西也因此事件认识而结婚。
