美國演員，在校時曾參加戲劇演出，18歲加入空軍。1959年退伍後，赴洛杉磯市立學院念戲劇。1967年首次在百老匯演出黑人版的歌舞劇《我愛紅娘》，其後在公共電視台兒童節目中固定演出6年之久。70年代初期跨足影壇，直至1987年以《花街傳奇》皮條客一角獲紐約、洛杉磯及全美三大影評人協會最佳男配角與金球、奧斯卡提名，獲得好萊塢重視。1989年以《為黛茜小姐開車》聲名大噪。如今是少數具有演技實力的黑人明星。
